Overview

Of a Feather was a game created for the 2022 Cross-Cultural Impact Game Jam sponsored by Unity. The game jam lasted for 6 days total, and involved coordinating a team with people across the world (our poor writer in Germany often had to stay up until 4 in the morning to meet with us).

The theme of this jam was “amplifying voices,” with a focus on the game team’s diversity and unique perspectives which come with that. Of a Feather won the Most Creative Award for that year.

My Work

I created the pitch for Of a Feather based on the concept of using birds as a vehicle for representation of under-represented groups in games, with an emphasis on the value that those unique perspectives offer.

I was the 2D Artist for all characters and UI elements, and I likewise led the writing team in writing the story and dialogue.

Because we were such a small team with no dedicated sound designer, I also composed the music.

Reflection

Being my first team-made game and first game jam, I felt especially lucky to have my pitch carried forward, and even luckier to have such a good team. As a small easter egg for developers, all of the birds on the island are named after each team member! Getting the Most Creative Award was also a huge honor.

I learned so much about game production from this game, and looking back, though my 2D art has improved significantly, I am still happy with my level of contribution. I tried to help in anyway I could since I lacked 3D modeling skills at the time, and in doing so got to touch every part of production.
